I recently finished reading “Randomize” by Andy Weir. He is probably one
of my favorite authors and comic creator (He used to have a web comic, and
its awesome). His writing generally blends the right amount of real world
science and entertaining characters for a technical audience. It’s a really
good short story about how quantum computing will affect the gambling industry.
It’s also part of an anthology called “Forward about various future
technologies.
I was sitting in the bar. It was a dark and dreary affair, the kind of place
you find yourself in after the world has crumbled. The furniture was old and
wooden. It was straight up medieval. There was a crackling fire going, but it
was starting to die down. All I saw around me reminded me of that fateful
shadow over Innsmouth. Such a tragic shame that whole affair.
Humans and safety is a long history, because as they say if you make
something idiot proof they will invent a better idiot. Just about any
piece of industrial equipment can become a weapon when misused. Most
other species in the galaxy weren’t that creative to misuse or find the
failure points in their technology. We took a different path than humans
did. Finding solutions that were safer from the get go, that a culture
of safety was not needed.
